Second grade is an exciting year packed full of enriching learning events. Students work throughout the year
to build the classroom community through cooperative learning, respect for one another's strengths and differences, as
well as infusing the character traits of fairness, responsibility, caring, citizenship, honesty, and trustworthiness.
The year culminates by building a model community on the classroom floor!
Language arts is the major curriculum focus. Students enhance their decoding skills to build their oral reading
fluency and to expand their comprehension skills. Emphasis is placed on the vowel sounds and building strategies to
attack words. Students also gain a greater understanding of vowel sounds and vowel patterns in words. Other
skills include writing complete sentences, using punctuation correctly, vocabulary building, as well as reading and spelling
sight words.
Math skills focus on problem solving strategies. Students learn steps to solving problems including understanding
the problems, making a plan, carry out the plan, and look back. Students improve their speed on the basic addition facts
and learn addition and subtraction with renaming and borrowing. A great deal of time is spent on counting money and
telling time.
Insects start the year in science followed by a farm unit and a study of the Arctic and Antarctic animals. Social
studies units include fire safety, drug awareness, Christmas traditions, and communities.
